Due to financial hardships this past year it is more important than ever to save money where you can in your home. Here at Energy Windows, Doors & More we are all about using the most energy efficient products on the market. This ensures optimum performance while saving our homeowners the most amount of money after our products are installed. Here we have compiled a list of things to look for when shopping for energy efficient replacement windows including air leakage, U-factor, and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC).
Every residence experiences some level of air infiltration as a result of air pressure differences between the inside and outside of the home. Keeping air leakage to a minimum is essential for attaining energy efficiency. Structurally strong air tight windows ensure lower heating bills and fewer drafts. To pass the air leakage test and achieve the NFRC certification the window must meet the requirements of a .3 rating or better. In accordance with NFRC all labels will read less than or equal to .3. The majority of Energy Windows, Doors & More products have an air leakage rating of .02.
The U-factor of a replacement window measures energy lost in your home. The lower the U-factor, the higher the performance of the window and the better it will insulate your home. Energy Star rated products are generally a .30 or below. Here at Energy Windows, Doors & More our products range from a .30 all the way down to a .14 for our composite window products.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)
A lower solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), means less solar radiation passing through your window. The lower the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient rating means your home will remain cooler during the summer months. Air leakage, U-Factor, and Solar heat gain coefficient are all very important ratings to look for when shopping for replacement windows.
